Nature-based solutions for peace: Challenges, good practices, tools and policy recommendations

Context: Biodiversity is crucial for addressing the global environmental crisis, yet it is increasingly threatened in conflict-affected areas, where destruction by military actions, unsustainable coping strategies, and weak environmental governance accelerate biodiversity loss. Conversely, efforts directed at nature conservation and biodiversity restoration in fragile and conflict-affected settings can have positive effects on communities’ resilience, social cohesion and peace. To bridge environmental, peace and security considerations in vulnerable areas, Nature-based solutions (NbS) - characterized as actions to manage, restore and protect the environment while simultaneously providing benefits for human well-being and societal cohesion - have seen uptake from governments, communities and organizations around the world.

While NbS can offer a holistic approach to climate action, development and social resilience, they can also come with shortcomings and risks, if not programmed and implemented with the necessary safeguards. Hence, there is an enormous need to learn from and share good practices, as well as challenges and failures, in the implementation of NbS for peace in conflict-affected settings.

Event Objectives: During the event, the main challenges and opportunities for conflict-sensitive environmental action and environmental peacebuilding will be discussed by panelists from civil society organisations and local communities with first-hand experience of such projects. This event will serve as a platform to present an online catalog of Nature-based Solutions for Peace, containing cases of good NbS practices around the globe, with the purpose of informing and inspiring programme design, policy formulation, and NbS investments in a just and peace-positive way.

The event aims to bring together representatives of governments, international organisations, development agencies, conservation groups, local communities, indigenous groups, civil society organisations and academia to engage in critical discussion on the NbS’ potential and concrete ways for restoring biodiversity in vulnerable and conflict-affected contexts.
